Where To Get The Best Golf Tips

While golf is a fun game to play, it is definitely not an easy game to master. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become very good at the game of golf. One way you can improve your chances of becoming a great golfer is to seek golf tips from a variety of sources. The more tips you receive, the better your chances become of refining your golf swing and consistently shooting low scores.

Take Lessons

One excellent way to receive proper golf tips is to take lessons at your local golf course. Most golf courses employ a golf pro who offers one on one lessons. These golf pros are an excellent source of knowledge, and can usually correct any major flaws in your swing. Through the use of computer technology, a golf pro can analyze your swing and tell you exactly what you are doing wrong. Once you know what you are doing wrong with your golf swing, you can focus all of your efforts at the driving range and on the course to correcting it.

Ask Buddies for Help

Golfing with a friend and asking him to watch your swing while you are playing a round is another good way to receive some tips that will help improve your score. Sometimes it can help to have another set of eyes watching your swing to see what you are doing wrong. Everyone knows what a good golf swing looks like, but not everyone can take the perfect swing with each stroke. By having your friend watch your swing, he can tell you what he thinks you are doing wrong and you can focus your efforts on improving your swing on the next shot.

If you decide to ask your friend for advice on what you are doing wrong during your swing, it is important to not take the criticism too seriously. While it can be very frustrating when you are struggling out on the course, your friend is just trying to help you correct your swing. Listening to him with an open mind may just be what you need to do in order to start hitting the ball better on a consistent basis.

When you are making good shots out on the course, golf is a fun and exciting game. However, if you are struggling through another bad round, the last thing you want to do is play golf again. Seeking golf advice from a few different sources can really help you turn your game around and help you to shoot lower scores on a consistent basis.

Romney's April cash grab nearly matches Obama's

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised almost as much money as President Barack Obama last month, taking in more than $40.1 million in fundraising efforts for his campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Romney's April contributions, released on Thursday, are three times the amount the presumptive Republican nominee raised in March. The surge comes as other party rivals dropped out, allowing the former Massachusetts governor and business executive to team up with the RNC.

"Here in the Southeast, all the folks who were enthusiastic and supporting all the other primary candidates, almost 100 percent of these folks are getting on board," said Barry Wynn, a prominent Romney fundraiser in South Carolina.

"You're always going to see an explosion of momentum once you have the candidate. ... The key at this point would be to make sure you could sustain that momentum."

Romney's figures come one day after the Obama campaign disclosed that it and the Democratic National Committee raised $43.6 million in April, a decline from the previous month.

In March, Romney raised $12.6 million compared to Obama's more than $53 million.

Romney's ability to close in on the Obama campaign in fundraising showed Republicans were solidifying behind the former governor ahead of the November 6 election.

The Romney campaign said 95 percent of the donations last month were $250 or less.

At the end of March, Obama's team emerged with ten times more cash in the bank than Romney's at $104.1 million. But by the end of April, the amount of cash Romney and his supporters had on hand jumped to $61.4 million from $10.1 million.

The Obama campaign has not yet disclosed how much cash it had in hand at the end of April.

Romney has devoted much of the past month to fundraising, and this week is on a two-day fundraising tour in Florida that was expected to net about $10 million for his campaign.

JOINING FORCES

Both Democrats and Republicans are expected to spend as much as $1 billion on campaigning for the White House. The money race gets a special boost from the presence of Super PACs, a relatively new breed of outside political groups that can raise and spend unlimited amounts as long as they do not coordinate with campaigns.

Republicans were swifter to embrace the notion, launching the deep-pocketed pro-Romney Super PAC, Restore Our Future, far ahead of any Democratic group. The pro-Obama Super PAC, Priorities USA Action, has yet to catch up to the nearly $52 million that Restore had raised by the end of March.

Priorities had raised just under $9 million by that time.

Facing attack ads from Restore and other influential groups opposing Obama, the president's re-election campaign has so far received little relief from Priorities and has started to invest heavily in advertising itself.

Presidential campaigns and most Super PACs are due to file complete April fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission by May 20.

"Mitt Romney has the record and plan to turn our country around - that is why he is receiving such enthusiastic support from voters across the country," RNC chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. "Along with the campaign, we will work to provide the resources so that we can defeat President Obama and change the direction of the country."

The RNC and Romney's campaign joined fundraising forces in early April as the field of Republican presidential candidates narrowed. A joint fund greatly increases how much a donor can give to help a candidate, thanks to larger contributions allowed for party organizations in addition to the campaign.

Obama, facing no challengers within his party, has been jointly fundraising with the Democratic party for months.

Campaigns can take only $2,500 per contribution during the primary process and another $2,500 per contribution for the general election. With a joint effort, a donor can also give up to $70,800 to the RNC and its local, state and district branches.

Florida still lags nation in Fortune 500 headquarters

by Jeff Ostrowski

After decades of touting low taxes and a business-friendly regulatory climate, Florida continues to punch below its weight in attracting corporate headquarters.

The latest Fortune 500 list shows 16 of the nation?s biggest companies headquartered here. Only 10 states boast more Fortune 500 home offices.

But adjust for population, and Florida moves to the back of the pack. The state is home to only 0.85 Fortune 500 companies per million residents, well below the U.S. average of 1.62.

Florida trails not only business hubs such as New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas and California but also less heralded states such as Iowa, Kansas and Kentucky.

Illegal immigration from Mexico is down, but legal immigration isn't ...

Photo by Nathan Gibbs/Flickr (Creative Commons)

A family looks north into the United States from Playas de Tijuana, January 2009

In a?short piece in?The Atlantic today, Council on Foreign Relations fellow Shannon K. O?Neill points out that as net migration to the U.S. from Mexico?has dropped sharply?in recent years,?there?s an interesting wrinkle to the northbound migration that continues.

While illegal immigration from Mexico to the U.S. has decreased, legal immigration from Mexico is holding steady. And compared with the level of unauthorized vs. authorized migration from Mexico a decade ago, the percentage of those coming legally is way up. O?Neill writes:

Another migratory change has also occurred: of the Mexicans that still come to the United States, many more do so legally. At the start of the twenty-first century, less than 10 percent came with papers. A decade later,?it is 50 percent.

What the piece links to is a lengthy U.S. State Department list of immigrant visas issued at foreign service posts abroad. The numbers bear it out: In 2000, there were 68, 412 U.S. immigrant visas issued to Mexicans at consular posts in Mexico; in 2010, there were 65,621.

Source: Pew Research Center

These numbers have fluctuated in the years in between, but not to the same degree as has illegal immigration, the bulk of it from Mexico. While it?s never been an exact measure, the number of reported U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions of migrants from Mexico peaked most recently in 2000 at more than 1.6 million arrests, dipped, then went up a bit again in the middle of the last decade. Since then, it has been?steadily on the decline.

The majority of the U.S. immigrant visas being issued in Mexico are family reunification visas, O?Neill writes, although others come on H-visas for work, from skilled workers to farm labor. The number of those coming from Mexico on?E-2 NAFTA visas?for investors and business interests has doubled since 2000, she writes; also going up is the number of Mexicans arriving on EB-5 visas, entrepreneur visas which require a minimum $500,000 investment in a U.S. business and the creation of jobs.

Will it change the conversation about immigration from Mexico? Perhaps not immediately. Polls still suggest that perceptions in the U.S. about the border, illegal immigration, and immigration in general don?t reflect the current reality seen in the numbers. But it?s food for thought.

Fitness can trump hypertension genes, says new study | Health ...

More posts about genetics and hypertension. And more about the benefits of exercise.

If your parents have a history of high blood pressure, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing the disease with moderate exercise and increased cardiovascular fitness, according to new research in the American Heart Association?s journal Hypertension.

In a study of more than 6,000 people, those who had a parent with high blood pressure but were highly fit had a 34 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure themselves, compared to those with a low-fitness level who had the same parental history.

?Understanding the roles that family history and fitness play in chronic diseases is critically important,? said Robin P. Shook, M.S., study lead author and a doctoral graduate student in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. ?The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise ? which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week ? can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history.?

Previous research indicates that parental history accounts for about 35 percent to 65 percent of the variability in blood pressure among offspring, with varying levels of risk based on which parent developed it and the age of onset.

Researchers followed a group of 6,278 predominantly Caucasian adults 20- to 80-years-old for an average 4.7 years. The participants were patients of the Cooper Clinic, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventive medicine, research and education in Dallas. Thirty-three percent of participants reported that a parent had hypertension.

When the study began, all participants were healthy, reported no physician diagnosis of hypertension, and achieved an exercise test score of at least 85 percent of their age-predicted maximal heart rate. Researchers determined participants? cardiorespiratory fitness using a maximal treadmill exercise test.

During the study, 1,545 participants reported they had developed hypertension.

Researchers found that:

  • Combining those with and without a family history of high blood pressure, high levels of fitness were associated with a 42 percent lower risk of developing hypertension, and moderate levels of fitness with a 26 percent lower risk.
  • People with both a low level of fitness and a parent with hypertension had a 70 percent higher risk for developing hypertension compared with highly fit people with no parental history.
  • Those with a high level of fitness and a parent with hypertension experienced only a 16 percent higher risk of developing hypertension compared to those who were fit and had no parental history.

?The correlation between fitness levels, parental history and risk are impossible to ignore,? Shook said. ?This awareness can serve the clinician and the patient, as they work together to find effective and reasonable ways to avoid the diseases that have affected their family members ? in some cases, for generations.?

The research findings may not apply to all people because the majority of the study participants were relatively fit, well-educated, middle to upper class white men.

The findings support the American Heart Association?s recommendations of moderately intense physical activity, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes or longer at least five days a week.

Giant manta rays are restless travelers, says satellite study (+video)

Giant manta rays, up to 25 feet wide, are more mobile than expected. A satellite survey shows a group of manta rays traveled 621 miles in two weeks.

Very little is known about giant manta rays, fish up to 25 feet wide that glide through the ocean like giant underwater bats. Now, in the first study using satellite tracking of the creatures, scientists have teased out a few secrets, including that the beasts travel a lot.

Working from a remote part of Mozambique for the last five years she has come across a discovery which changes the way we see giant mantas completely.

The new study tracked six manta rays ??four females, one male and a juvenile (undetermined sex) ? for 13 days off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

"The satellite tag data revealed that some of the rays traveled more than 1,100 kilometers [621 miles] during the study period," study team member Matthew Witt, of the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute, said in a statement. "The rays spent most of their time traversing coastal areas plentiful in zooplankton and fish eggs from spawning events."

Like baleen whales and whale sharks, manta rays (Manta birostris) are filter feeders that swim through the water with mouths agape collecting huge gulps of plankton-filled water; they use small finterlike structures called gill rakers in their mouths to filter out the teensy zooplankton.

The research team also found the rays, closely related to sharks, spent nearly all their time within 200 miles of the coast. [Photos: Mysterious Whale Sharks]

"Studies such as this one are critical in developing effective management of manta rays, which appear to be declining worldwide," said Howard Rosenbaum, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's Ocean Giant Program.

Manta rays are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They're sometimes captured as a byproduct of using fishing nets. They are captured for shark bait and are in demand for their gill rakers, which are used in traditional Chinese medicinal trade.

The majority of ray locations revealed by the satellite tracking were in major shipping routes in the region, with only 11.5 percent of the locations residing in marine protected areas. As such manta rays could be vulnerable to ship strikes, the researchers suggested.

Sometimes called "devilfish," manta rays are harmless to humans. They lack the stinger of the better-known stingray. Manta rays have the highest brain-to-body ratio of sharks, rays and skates. They give birth to live young, usually one or two "pups" every one or two years.

"While the broader migratory movements of manta rays are still not known, it is clear that satellite tracking technology has the potential to offer great inroads into understanding movements and contextualising spatially explicit threats to this species," the researchers write this week in the online journal PLoS ONE.

No Shortcuts, No Mercy: The Bloodsport Of Recruitment

bloodsportOne year ago I wrote an article called "Why The New Guy Can't Code," about how the industry-standard process for hiring software engineers is broken, shortsighted, and counterproductive. It remains my most-read TC post. Of course, I was far from the first to say so, and even farther from the last; every few weeks a similar rant bubbles onto the home page of Hacker News. And yet recruiting remains broken. When I wrote that post I imagined that in the subsequent year some sharp startup would come along and turn the game on its ear -- but no. A few have tried: Gitalytics, which tries to use Github data to identify good engineers; Gild, which acquired Coderloop last year and is still going strong; and especially StackOverflow Careers, which leverages the software world's most indispensable site to match employers and employees. But I think it's fair to say that all the contenders so far serve as adjuncts to the traditional recruiting process, rather than replacing it with something disruptively new. All of which adds up to today's very weird situation: there's a desperate talent shortage across the industry, but at the same time, employers are so terrified by the prospect of ever hiring a subpar engineer that the recruiting process has become increasingly gruelling and time-consuming, even though there's little evidence that the standard interview gauntlet identifies good engineers. Of late I'm getting more involved with recruiting myself. (My day job is at the software development shop HappyFunCorp; we're hiring.) And, pending the arrival of that hypothetical revolutionary recruiting startup, I have a modest proposal: stop worrying so much about hiring, and start putting your HR energies into firing.

Uber Is Testing In San Diego, Gives A Lift To Tony Hawk

uber tony hawkUber, the mobile car service that's becoming indispensable (I think I spend more money on Uber than on food), is continuing its geographic expansion by entering "super secret stealth test mode" in San Diego. "Super secret" means something different for Uber than it does for most people ? apparently it involves posting about it on the company blog and then emailing tech press for coverage, similar to its "secret" test in Philadelphia. Oh, and it's talking about its first San Diego passenger, pro skateboarder Tony Hawk (apictured above).

Spotify Plays Can Increase iTunes Sales. Here?s Proof!

Spotify Drives iTunes SalesDespite fears that streaming access cannibalizes sales, classical music record label X5?tells me when it launched an app within Spotify and saw streams of one album increase 412% in a month, that album's iTunes sales shot up 50%. The Swedish label's "The 50 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music" soon reached #1 on the iTunes Classical charts, and broke into the iTunes Top 200 album charts for the first time, hitting #152. The stats back up claims by some record labels and Spotify's CEO Daniel Ek that there's no evidence of Spotify or other streaming services negatively impacting music sales. More data like this could encourage artists and labels to promote their streaming music presences, and push acts like The Black Keys and Paul McCartney who've pulled their catalogues from Spotify to come back.

Vibrant Media, The Company Behind Those In-Text Ads, Announces Lightbox Video Units

lightbox_secret (1)Vibrant Media is probably best-known for its in-text advertising, but it has been expanding its lineup of ad units. The latest edition is something it's calling Vibrant Lightbox Video. Vibrant already offered video ads, but a spokesperson tells me there are a number of new pieces here. For one thing, it's using Vibrant's Lightbox Image technology, which identifies "brand-safe" images, then overlays advertising on top of them ? in this case, a message asking users to hover over the image or click on it to watch a video. The ad can also be activated through in-text ads. Either way, there's a 3-2-1 countdown before the video starts, and the advertiser only pays if the viewer actually chooses to watch the video.
