Scientific art contest taken with grain of salt

A close-up look at a grain of salt, a blue glacier against a pink sky and a map of sea-turtle tracks are among the winners of the 2012 Research as Art competition.

The competition, organized by Swansea University in Wales, is open to all Swansea researchers in any field who have a cool image to share. This year's entries included more than 100 images, from which judges picked 15 winners.

The overall winner was submitted by Hollie Rosier of Swansea University, who came across a grain of sodium sulfate and sodium chloride (salt) while researching jet turbine safety. Jet turbines become very hot when in use and are also exposed to the atmosphere. This combination can lead to compounds such as salt encrusting the turbines. Rosier and her colleagues reproduced and photographed one such salt grain in the laboratory. [ See all the Winning Images ]

"This tiny grain of salt, with a diameter of only 2 millimeters, has recrystallized from an aqueous solution in different phases to create its unique and unusual appearance," Rosier said in a statement. "The importance of this research leads to the safer design and operation of aircraft engines."

Though Rosier's winning image is in stark black-and-white, other scientific photographers played with color. Tavi Murray, a glaciologist at Swansea University, was recognized for his jaw-dropping photograph of Arctic icebergs against a pink sky. Rami Malki of the university's Marine Renewable Research Group made it to the top 15 for his dreamy blue image of the flow of water around a tidal-stream turbine. And biologist Rebecca Scott won for her map of ocean currents upon which baby sea turtles drift.

"Research is more than the hard facts that make it into the papers and journals ? the Research as Art competition reveals the day-to-day human experience that lies beneath the results," contest judge Flora Graham, the deputy editor of NewScientist.com, said in a statement.

The art of science is becoming increasingly popular, with multiple competitions for scientists to display their creative side. Every year, for example, Princeton University holds an Art of Science exhibition, featuring everything from models of Earth's magnetic field to images of nanocrystals. And the winners of camera-maker Nikon's annual Small World competition can enjoy widespread admiration of their macro photographs of the very tiny.

The Swansea image competition is "an opportunity for researchers to engage, inform and inspire people," contest organizer Richard Johnson, a lecturer in engineering, said in a statement. "Researchers have a responsibility to make their research accessible ? and the thirst from the public is certainly there!"

Heat hold off Thunder in wild finish, even NBA Finals at 1-1

OKLAHOMA CITY?

Thursday's lesson? The Oklahoma City Thunder aren't going away, too young and too impetuous to know better, frighteningly resilient.

Thursday's other lesson? The Miami Heat are a different team when all three of the Big Three take the court for the opening tip.

With Chris Bosh back in the starting lineup, the Heat pushed to an early 17-point lead and then held on for dear life in what turned into a 100-96 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 of the NBA Finals at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

It wasn't easy and nearly proved too harrowing, not decided until Thunder forward Kevin Durant missed a running jumper with 9.9 seconds to play and his team within two.

But the Heat now return to AmericanAirlines Arena for the next three games, starting Sunday at 8 p.m., tied 1-1 in this best-of-seven series.

James said he knew exactly what was at stake as the Thunder were rallying, and as the Heat finally held their ground.

"It meant everything," he said of holding on. "We had played too well in the first 36 minutes for this to slip away from us."

He exited more than aware of what he is up against.

"We knew they were going to keep fighting," he said,. "We knew they were going to keep coming.

"We just wanted to try to make one more or two more plays than they made."

Just two games in, the series already has been a wild ride.

"This is going to be like this probably every single game,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Everything we've been through shows this group has a resourcefulness."

Especially when whole, which the Heat were Thursday, with Bosh back in the starting lineup for the first time in a month.

"I kind of put it in my mind that I knew I had to give it the effort I did before, whether I was ready or not," said Bosh, who had played the previous four games off the bench, after missing three weeks with a lower-abdominal strain in the opener of the second round on May 13 against the Indiana Pacers.

The Heat could not exhale until forward LeBron James stepped to the line with 7.1 seconds to play and buried a pair of free throws to close out his 32-point night.

"He's been doing it in so many different ways in this playoff run," Spoelstra said of James, who this time did it by shooting 12 of 12 from the foul line.

A game after blowing a 13-point lead in Tuesday's Game 1 105-94 loss, the Heat nearly blew a 17-point first-half lead and an advantage that stood at 15 in the third quarter.

But behind James, this time they held on.

And at this stage, that's all that matters.

Buying Commercial Property Is Not Always A Good Idea | Key West ...

11 June 2012

Posted by Dennis under: Key West Commercial Real Estate .

Make sure you are clear about the actual amount of square footage that?s available. Commercial property can be effectively measured by how much square footage is actually usable by a business, whereas the physical total includes walls and uninhabitable or inaccessible areas. Therefore, it is very important to know both types of square footage.

There are many things to consider when determining the best option between two commercial properties. When choosing between the two, think big! Getting adequate financing is very important in undertaking an investment that pertains to a ten or twenty unit apartment complex. Also, purchasing more units is like buying in bulk. The more you buy, the cheaper each unit will be.

If you want to make sure that your real estate broker is right for you, inquire as to what they think is a success or failure. Ask about their methods for gathering and interpreting results. Keep asking questions until the broker?s strategies are clear to you. You need to understand what these strategies are so that you can evaluate if you are comfortable with them. Don?t work with any real estate broker whose beliefs and methods aren?t in line with your own.

As mentioned, commercial real estate isn?t a money tree. You will need to play a very active role, devote time and make a sizable investment, at the beginning, to bring about the results you?re seeking. Even with the best laid plans, your efforts might lead to loss.

Garage Door Monitor: Advice To Consider Before Starting A Home ...

A light color material is an excellent choice for a new roof. Dark colors absorb light and cause the attic to become extremely hot. Lighter colors reflect the sun, instead. You won?t feel as suffocated when you visit your attic.

Listening to music while working is a common desire when outside the house. While this can be a great idea, avoid using headphones. Headphones can prevent you from hearing things that can alert you to problems or danger during the project.

It is possible to expand storage capacity by using old shoe boxes. You can use fabric or wallpaper to decorate the outsides of the boxes to make them more pleasing to the eye. This is an excellent way to add storage and drama to any room.

When it comes to home improvement, get creative and figure out what you are looking to accomplish ahead of time. Once you?ve started a project, you?ll be able to know what steps to take and hard decisions won?t have to be made. There are numerous sources of inspiration for your next home improvement project.

You do not always need to rely on store-bought art pieces to dress up walls; instead, look for interesting and unusual wall hangings such as three-dimensional tiles. You can use wall decals that come in thousands of different designs that will fit any budget.

Stay safe when doing home improvement projects! Always turn off your gas line if you are working in any area that is near one. Gas is volatile and construction projects near sources of it require caution. Knowing where to shut the gas off is of utmost importance! Consequently, the gas lines should be located to avoid accidental damage.

When developing a working relationship with contractors, get everything in writing in the form of a solid contract, which includes all applicable costs. Also make sure a guarantee of work performed is included within a specified time, as well as how you will make payments.

Putting in another bathroom will add a great deal of value to your home. A second bathroom, particularly if it is on a different floor from the first bathroom, is really helpful for family and guests. Inevitably, two people will need to use the restroom at the same time, after all.

Arrange for a professional home inspection if you are buying a home. It is best to get a professional opinion in case there is anything that you missed when walking through the home. Enlisting a professional inspector who does not have a stake in the sale is a smart method of keeping things honest.

Splash a fresh coat of paint on your home?s entrance and replace your old, faded welcome mat. Your entrance plays an important role in how you welcome your guests into your home. Extra touches such as a pretty potted plant at the door will surely impress visitors.

Clearly, home improvement projects are not as frightening as you may have thought initially. When you start a project, you start learning things that will be useful going forward. When you use the tips laid out here, you give yourself the information you need to do another project.

A Chinese Shul?s Love Story

North Bank Suzhou Creek, a bilingual production set in wartime Shanghai, brings music back to a silent sanctuary

Emilie Ohana (right) and Wang Jiajian play star-crossed lovers in North Bank Suzhou Creek, staged in Shanghai's former Ohel Moshe Synagogue.(Rebecca Kanthor)

A Shul for Shanghai

Shanghai?s historic Ohel Rachel Synagogue was allowed to serve as a place of worship during the World Expo, which closes this week. Now what?

The former Ohel Moshe Synagogue in the northern Hongkou District of Shanghai was once the spiritual home of European Jews taking refuge during World War II. Most of those 20,000 refugees moved on after the war and the establishment of Communist China. These days, the synagogue forms part of the Jewish Refugees Museum; it?s sparsely furnished and usually quiet. (An exhibit on the community opens later this month in New York City.)

For a few weeks this past spring that changed, as the synagogue?s prayer hall was transformed into a wartime caf?, in which was set a historical drama called North Bank Suzhou Creek. (The play has since had a three-night run in New York City, and there are plans in the works for additional performances.) The production, a love story full of musical numbers, is by Chinese playwright William Sun and was co-directed by Michael Leibenluft and Jeffrey Sichel, both American. The six-person cast was a mix of French, British, Chinese, and American performers. Shanghai-based reporter Rebecca Kanthor visited the set during rehearsals and sold-out performances and talked to the actors and directors about the pleasures and pains of putting on a bilingual, bi-cultural production of this kind. Much like any other businesses, there are the better months and those that are just not as profitable. However, in the most recent months, he noticed a decline in new clients and sales. He also noticed that two of his field representatives seem to have had a lot of unaccounted time during their assigned work hours.

The Solution:

Victor?s concerns pushed him to contact ICS of Illinois for a free consultation and the experienced investigators put together a comprehensive strategy to prevent furtherloss.

The team of Investigators from ICS of Illinois started by installing GPS tracking units on all of the company owned vehicles. ICS conducted mobile surveillance to document the activities of the field representatives. By utilizing a combination of GPS technology and covert video surveillance, ICS of Illinois documented on film both field representatives visiting and conducting unauthorized business outside of their assigned sales area.

Once Victor confronted the two employees with the incriminating video footage, the employees were shocked but still denied wrongdoing. Victor fired both employees and confiscated their company issued equipment including their assigned cell phones.

The Investigators from ICS of Illinois inventoried the devices and transported them to their technical facilities to recover any deleted data including text and call history. This data recovery investigation revealed a long history of text messages as well as incoming and outgoing calls from both former field representatives to one of Victor?s biggest competitors.

These text messages verified that both of the former employees were also working for Victor?s competitor. Victor arrived at his former employee?s benefit hearings with a court ready report of findings provided by ICS of Illinois along with two investigators ready to testify on his behalf. :
