Welder's torch believed to have started fire at London hobby shop

Firefighters quickly doused a blaze at an Egerton St. hobby shop tonight that was believed to be sparked by a welder's torch.

Crews were called to the address on a back alley near Dame St. shortly after 7 p.m.

A large man door had to be cut away to get inside the building located behind an automotive upholstery business.

Once inside, firefighters could be seen spraying down a damaged Chevy truck.

Witnesses at the scene said there were two cars, a Camaro and a Mustang, also stored inside the building.

London police at the scene said the man leasing the building had been welding about 30 minutes before the fire was discovered.

He left briefly to help a friend with moving. When he returned the building was on fire.

No estimate of damage is available.

'Tiny Tornado' Tecia Torres splashes on MMA scene with pro debut at Invicta FC 3

by Derek Bolender on Oct 07, 2012 at 10:15 am ET

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? To anyone watching, it sure didn't look like a professional debut.

Former amateur strawweight star Tecia Torres (1-0) looked like a seasoned veteran as she dominated another former amateur standout in Kaiyana Rain (0-1) for the better part of three rounds on her way to a unanimous-decision win (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

The bout was part of the preliminary card of Invicta FC 3, which took place Saturday at Kansas City, Kan.'s Memorial Hall. The event streamed live on InvictaFC.com (watch the full Torres-Rain fight).

The 23-year-old American Top Team product used her patented muay Thai and kickboxing to win the majority of the exchanges and cruise to victory.

"Once the bell rings, it's just me and her, and it's like another sparring session at the gym," Torres told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following her win.

Torres was a combined 16-4 in kickboxing and muay Thai bouts to go along with her unblemished 7-0 amateur MMA record heading into the contest.

After a competitive start to the opening round, Torres rocked Rain late with a flurry of punches, which had her visibly hurt and backpedaling. However, Torres was unable to finish.

"I knew she was going to come in there wanting to bang with me," Torres said. "She likes to fight like that. She likes to brawl."

In the second and third frames, Torres repeatedly landed punches and kicks at range, avoided counters, landed knees in the clinch, and bloodied her opponent's face in the process.

"(The) game plan going into it was definitely to keep the fight standing," she said. "I wanted to own the ring, control the ring, stay inside the 'star' area, and stay away from the cage. I think I listened to my corner well. I used my movement. I went in, I hit her, I moved off, and I made her miss. Sometimes I would back up, but when I backed up, I got back on track and went back to my game plan. I think what won me the fight this time was my boxing, my hands."

Not to be overlooked was the gainful improvements she demonstrated in the grappling department. Torres was able to defend the first two takedowns attempted by Rain with ease. Late in the third round, Rain got her to the mat using a bulldog choke. However, Torres took her back in the process and worked a rear0naked choke.

"Most of my fights have been standup fights, but like I showed today, I was able to keep myself on my feet," Torres said. "When she did bring it to the ground, I was able to get her back in a secure, tight position. It's definitely a work in progress. It's definitely not like my standup, but it's coming."

All in all, it was a big night for "The Tiny Tornado." And she's ready for more.

Her seven amateur fights came in a 10-month span, so it's clear she likes to stay as active as possible if healthy.

"I would like to fight for the next (Invicta) show," Torres said, predictably. "I hear it's in January. Physically, I feel great. A little bit of bruising on my shin, but besides that, I'm feeling good."

The robots will love this latest Gotye cover song

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

We're big fans of clever people making music out of unorthodox devices. Even if you think you've heard Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" one too many times, give it a listen via this new viral video.

YouTube user bd594 has attracted 1.4 million views on a video showcasing his deft understanding of technology and music. His page description reads: Experiments in music, electronics, robotics and high voltage circuits combined.

The video description goes into nerdy detail about the devices making the music -- there's an HP scanner providing the "vocals" and audio channels are fed into an oscilloscope. Two hard drives are used as drums and cymbal. A xylophone does the job it was intended to do. bd594 even thanks an electronics-parts store in Toronto for great deals on hard-to-find items.

Gotye's hit song made its own catchy impact this summer thanks to repeated radio play and clever covers online. The viral storm played off the original song's simple lyrics and own visually compelling video. Remember five people on one guitar? How about this one?-- "The Star Wars That I Used to Know"? And because kids in cars doing just about anything gets our attention, we loved these two.

"This is how they will amuse themselves when the humans are gone," reads one YouTube comment on the above video. Considering the attention the video has already received, we humans aren't waiting for the machines.

Writing The Wrongs: I'm Tired

GADI ADELMAN October 2, 2012

Thirty-one years is long time. Actually, it's far too long. This week will be my birthday and I won't be celebrating.

At the age of 51, I can only look back and wonder why, why things have gotten worse rather than better. I have been speaking, writing and teaching about terror, Islam, Sharia and counter-terror for 31 years.

With all the news surrounding the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya, I have to start with the last death of an American Ambassador.

Although the last U.S. ambassador to die in the line of duty was Arnold Raphel, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, it is unsure whether it was a terrorist act. He perished in a plane crash in 1988, along with the then president of Pakistan, Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Prior to that, the last ambassador to be killed in the line of duty was Adolph Dubs, the U.S. ambassador in Afghanistan, in 1979. On February 14, 1979, he was kidnapped by four terrorists and was killed when he was shot during an exchange of gunfire started between the terrorists and Afghan security forces.
An American Ambassador killed by terrorists. Did America notice? No.
Months after the Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran and Iran voted to become an Islamic Republic we had the embassy takeover. On November 4, 1979 Iranians seized the U.S. embassy, taking 66 hostages. 14 were later released with the remaining 52 freed after 444 days on the day of President Reagan's inauguration.
attack iran embassy 1979
This was not enough for people to take notice.
When I arrived back in the U.S. in 1981, I tried and tried to introduce this country to what I knew would be needed, anti-terrorism. I applied and interviewed with every alphabet soup government agency and was shot down by each and every one with the exception of the CIA. I was told, "This is America, we don't have terrorism."
The CIA offered me a position that I couldn't speak about for years under the penalty of ?treason', but needless to say it wasn't in the area of counter-terror. I refused the offer since it would have been going against my own morals, ethics and beliefs, not to mention, Israel.
In 1981 there weren't even a handful of counter-terror people, as a matter of fact I knew of only two, myself and my dear friend and colleague Dr. Walid Phares.
Interestingly, both I and Dr. Phares have been saying and warning of the same things for all these years.? Even though what we say and warn about seem to come to fruition each and every time, very few listen.
Between 1982 and 1991 we had the kidnappings and deaths of Americans in Lebanon. Thirty U.S. and other Western hostages were kidnapped in Lebanon by Hezbollah. Some were killed, some died in captivity and some were eventually released. Terry Anderson was held for 2,454 days.
This too was not enough for people to take notice.
Shortly after I arrived back in the U.S. from Israel we had the Lebanon bombings.
On April 18, 1983, the U.S. embassy in Beirut was bombed killing 63 people, most were embassy and CIA staff members, several were soldiers and one was a Marine. 17 of the dead were Americans.
marine barrack bombing
That same year on October 23, the U.S. Marines barracks were destroyed by suicide bombers during their stay as part of multinational ?peace keeping force'. What many do not know is that this was only the second "suicide bombing" in history, it was carried out by the terrorist organization Hezbollah and killed 241 American servicemen: 220 marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers, along with sixty other Americans injured.
The Marine barrack attack was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima of World War II, the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States military since the first day of the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War, and the deadliest single attack on Americans overseas since World War II.
Was the bombing of the U.S. embassy and the Marine barracks in Lebanon not enough for people to realize that perhaps we as Americans were not dealing with a conventional enemy? Did the American people take notice? No. Did the world take notice? No.
Before the end of that horrendous year on December 12, 1983, the U.S. embassy in Kuwait City, Kuwait was attacked by Shiite truck bombers, killing five and injuring 80.
Did America start to take notice? No.
Then a second time within 17 months on September 20, 1984 a suicide bomber driving a truck packed with 400 pounds of explosives targeted the American embassy in Aukar, nine miles north of Beirut. 23 people are killed and 21 injured.

More flag draped coffins. Did America start to notice a trend here? No.
Dec. 3, 1984 we had the hijacking of Kuwait Airways Flight 221on its way from Kuwait to Pakistan. After it was hijacked it was diverted to Tehran. The hijackers killed two American officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development. Hezbollah was once again found to be behind this as well.
Did anyone notice? No.
The Middle East wasn't the only area Americans were attacked. On April 12, 1985 the El Descanso restaurant just outside Madrid, Spain was bombed. The explosion killed 18 Spaniards and injured 82 others, including 11 American servicemen, who according to the investigation were the target of the attack. The Islamic Jihad Organization claimed responsibility for the bombing.

More Americans targeted. Did we notice? No.
Once again, Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad struck at Americans. On June 14, 1985, TWA Flight 847 was hijacked. The eight crewmembers and 145 passengers endured a three-day intercontinental ordeal and were held for 17 days. Some passengers were beaten. Passengers with Jewish sounding names were separated from the others, and U.S. Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem was tortured and murdered. His body was thrown onto the tarmac. Dozens of passengers were held hostage over the next two weeks until released by their captors after some of their demands were met.

It wasn't only the American servicemen and women that had to worry. On October 7, 1985, four heavily armed Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise ship, Achille Lauro. The ship had more than 400 passengers and crew. The terrorists killed disabled American tourist 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer because he was a Jew, and threw his body overboard with his wheelchair.
killing of leon klinghoffer
Did anyone outside of the Klinghoffer family notice? Not really.
Muslim terrorists found that airports were easier than cruise ships and on December 27, 1985, four PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) terrorists walked up to the shared ticket counter for Israel's El Al Airlines and Trans World Airlines at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport outside Rome, Italy. After they fired assault rifles and threw grenades, 16 were dead and 99 were injured.
Within minutes on the same day, the Schwechat Airport (Vienna International Airport) in Vienna, Austria, was attacked as well. Three terrorists threw hand grenades into a crowd of passengers checking in for a flight to Tel Aviv, two people were killed instantly and 39 others injured. A third victim died on January 22, 1986, of hand grenade wounds sustained in the attack. These two attacks killed 19 people, 5 of whom were Americans. The bombing was linked to Libya.
More Americans dead. Did America notice? No.
On April 2, 1986, terrorists exploded a bomb inside TWA Flight 840 as it flew from Rome to Athens. Four American citizens, including a nine-month-old infant fell to their deaths after being sucked from the cabin through the nine-by-four foot hole that the blast created in the side of the plane. ?Five others on the aircraft were injured as the cabin suffered a rapid decompression.
Anyone remember TWA 840? Anyone notice? No.
April 5, 1986, saw the attack on the La Belle discoth?que in West Berlin, Germany. This was yet another location that was commonly frequented by United States soldiers. A bomb placed under a table near the disk jockey's booth exploded killing three people and injuring 230 people, including 79 American servicemen. This attack was also linked to Libya.
More American servicemen killed. Did any Americans notice? No.
Another hijacking of an American plane occurred on September 5, 1986, while on the ground at Karachi, Pakistan, by four terrorists from the Abu Nidal Organization. Pan Am Flight 73 had 360 on board. Twenty of the passengers were killed during the hijacking, 13 were from India and the rest were from United States, Pakistan and Mexico.
An American plane hijacked. Did any Americans notice? No.
Excluding Americans that were killed in Israel in other terror attacks, there was two years of quiet that was shattered in Lockerbie on December 21, 1988. This time it was Pan Am Flight 103 departing from Frankfurt to New York. It was blown up in midair, killing all 259 passengers and another 11 people on the ground in Scotland.
pan am flight 103 wreckage
You would have thought that after this Americans would take notice. Sadly, no.
On January 27, 1989, three simultaneous bombings were carried out against U.S. business targets, the Turkish American Businessmen Association and the Economic Development Foundation in Istanbul, and the Metal Employees Union in Ankara.
More Americans as targets. Did America notice? No.
More Americans were targeted on June 12, 1989, in Bosphorus Straits, Turkey. A bomb exploded aboard an unoccupied boat used by U.S. consular staff. The explosion caused extensive damage but no casualties.
American State Department employees targeted. Did any Americans notice? No.
Between 1989 and 1991 there were no less than six attacks on Americans and American servicemen all on U.S. bases. On October 11, 1989, in Izmir, Turkey, an explosive charge went off outside a U.S. military PX.
On February 7, 1991, in Adana, terrorists shot and killed a U.S. civilian contractor as he was getting into his car at the Incirlik Air Base, Turkey.
On February 28, 1991, two terrorists shot and wounded a U.S. Air Force officer as he entered his residence in Izmir, Turkey.
On March 28, 1991, three U.S. marines were shot at and injured by an unknown terrorist while driving near Camp Three, in Jubial, Saudi Arabia.
On October 28, 1991, Victor Marwick, an American soldier serving at the Turkish-American base, Tuslog in Ankara, Turkey, was killed and his wife wounded in a car bomb attack. The Turkish Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.
Lastly on October 28, 1991, two car bombings killed a U.S. Air Force sergeant and severely wounded an Egyptian diplomat in Istanbul, Turkey. The Turkish Islamic Jihad again claimed responsibility.
military funeral arlington
Yet more flag draped coffins. Did anyone notice? No.
The year 1991 saw more attacks on Americans in Beirut, Lebanon. On November 8, a 100-kg car bomb destroyed the administration building of the American University in Beirut, killing one person and wounding more than a dozen.
Through all the attacks on Americans in 1991, did America notice? No.
On October 12, 1992, a U.S. soldier serving with the United Nations was stabbed and wounded near the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq.
Back in the U.S. on January 25, 1993, a Pakistani gunman opened fire on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees standing outside of the building in Virginia. Two agents, Frank Darling and Bennett Lansing, were killed and three others wounded.
This occurred on American soil in Virginia. Did Americans notice? No.
Then in 1993 we had the first attack on the World Trade Center. On February 26, a massive bomb exploded in a van in the underground parking garage below the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six and wounding 1,042. Four terrorists were responsible for the attack.
WTC attack 1993
At this point I really thought that America would take notice. I was wrong.
Between the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center and September 11, 2001 there were at least 55 other attacks around the world by Muslim terrorists that targeted Americans, many were killed and scores more injured, but America didn't notice.
These listed attacks were against Americans; during this same period Israel was the target of and suffered even more attacks.
Since 9/11, things have gotten worse throughout the world, not better. Somehow through backwards political correctness and ignorance, the perpetrator has made himself the victim. Sadly, that's what Americans notice. What's more, most Americans believe it.
It has been stated by leaders the world over as they have seen their own countries succumb to and be held hostage by Islam.
Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, on February 11, 2011, while being interviewed on French National Television about Islam in his country,

"My answer is clearly yes, it [multiculturalism] is a failure."
On February 5, 2011, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, stated in a speech while speaking on taking a tougher stance on groups promoting Islamist terror in his country,
"Frankly, we need a lot less of the passive tolerance of recent years and much more active, muscular liberalism. Let's properly judge these organizations: Do they believe in universal human rights - including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism?"
"Again it just seems the Muslim community is very much in the spotlight, being treated as part of the problem as opposed to part of the solution."
Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany stated on October 17, 2010 while speaking on Muslims in Germany,
"We kidded ourselves for a while that they wouldn't stay, but that's not the reality."
"Of course the tendency had been to say, 'let's adopt the multicultural concept and live happily side by side, and be happy to be living with each other'. But this concept has failed, and failed utterly."
As leader after leader has seen their country under the threat of terror and retaliation become more Islamic, more Sharia compliant and they lose their right to free speech, they have all come to the same conclusion. Americans though don't take notice.
The Arab Spring has brought us more Islamic ruled governments, not more "freedom;" the reason is simple, what we in the West refer to as "freedom" is not what Muslims see as freedom. Their freedom is that of the Quran. Their freedom is the word of Allah. Their freedom is living like they did 1400 years ago. Period.
If you think I am wrong, look at the Middle East. Take notice.
I'm tired of being called "an alarmist," I'm tired of being called "an Islamophobe," I'm tired of being called "a nut," but most of all I'm tired of America not waking up to the truth.
Since the terror attack that should have been the one to end all others, 9/11, there have been 19,680 deadly attacks, with over 260,000 deaths, all in the name of Islam. This is not a few people "that have hijacked a religion." This is the religion. This is Islam. It's time to take notice.

FDA warns Zimmer over manufacturing of hip devices

(Reuters) - Zimmer Holdings Inc said it received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration citing problems with manufacturing and testing processes for artificial hip devices made at the company's Ponce, Puerto Rico, plant.

The warning letter, dated September 19, does not restrict production or shipment of the hip devices, called Trilogy Acetabular Systems, or require withdrawal of any products from the market, Zimmer said in a regulatory filing.

The FDA said Zimmer failed to implement a testing mechanism to demonstrate the products met certain design specifications and had not validated the effects of manufacturing operations on products that incorporate metallic spikes.

The warning follows a June inspection of the company's Ponce plant. Zimmer said it temporarily suspended release of the affected products and has since completed the validation process for Trilogy products that do not incorporate metallic spikes.

The company expects to complete validation of Trilogy spiked products within the next few weeks.

State will move mental health patients from Mandeville to Pineville ...

The state will begin to implement its controversial plan to close SoutheastLouisianaHospitalnear Mandeville Tuesday when it moves 60 patient beds to a similar state-run mental health facility in Pineville. On Oct. 9, the state Department of Health and Hospitals will transfer an additional 34 beds to the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System facility in Jackson, La., department spokesman Meghan Speakes said.

?

DHH is still identifying private partners in the New Orleans and north shore areas for the remaining 17 adult acute care beds and 50 youth patient beds. Those relocations are expected to be completed by the end of 2012, Speakes said in a release.

?

Citing reduced federal money for Medicaid, DHH announced in July it would shutter the hospital, located just east of Mandeville on U.S. 190. Department officials said they want to ensure a sustainable behavioral health care system for the future by de-emphasizing the role of large public institutions and instead building partnerships with community providers.

?

The announcement touched off raging opposition in the western St. Tammany community, particularly among hospital staffers and families of hospital patients. Two public hearings have drawn large crowds to speak against the closure of the hospital and the administration of Gov. Bobby Jindal. Several public bodies, including the Mandeville City Council, have gone on record to oppose the state's decision.

?

Area legislators, most of whom are close political allies of Jindal, have also spoken against the move. In September, legislators sought an opinion from the state Attorney General's Office as to whether the state had the authority to close the facility. A spokesperson for the AG's office said Monday that the opinion, sought by State Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, is still being researched.

?

Supporters say the hospital, which provides mental health and substance abuse treatment for patients from throughout the New Orleans area, allows families to stay in close contact with patients, an advantage that will cease when the beds are transferred to Jackson and Pineville.

?

SoutheastLouisianaHospital is also provides an economic boost to the parish. With 563 employees, it is one of the largest employers in St. Tammany. Currently, 476 of those positions are filled and 87 are vacant, the result of normal turnover, officials said.

?

Jindal administration officials said they are grappling with an $859 million cut to the state's federal Medicaid financing and must take steps to close the gap. They estimate closing the hospital will save $1.6 million this fiscal year and $3.5 million in subsequent years.

?

Hospital supporters said they hope to continue the fight to preserve the hospital or find a private entity that might be interested in taking over its operations, which they acknowledge would be plan B.

?

State Rep. Tim Burns, R-Mandeville, said he would like for the the hospital to remain as it is, operated by the state and treating patients from throughout the region. But he is not optimistic.

?

"I just don't think there's anything we can do to stop the transfer of patients,'' he said. "It's a regrettable thing."

U.S. coughs up Ryder Cup after monumental collapse

MEDINAH, Ill. ? It will go down as the biggest choke in Ryder Cup history, a collapse that even considering the pressure and tension and unpredictability of this remarkable event, was so unexpected as to defy belief.

The United States, utterly dominant on the first two days of competition in this Chicago suburb, failed to hold its nerve and self-destructed on a dramatic final afternoon to allow Europe to retain the trophy, 14.5 points to 13.5.

Steve Stricker failed to win a single match in three days at the Ryder Cup. (AP)Steve Stricker failed to win a single match in three days at the Ryder Cup. (AP)No home team had ever surrendered a lead of this magnitude, and the gap of four points heading into Sunday should have been enough to ensure a comfortable cruise for the Americans.

Instead, Europe started like a train, kept rolling, piled on some pressure ? and the Americans simply could not handle it. Momentum, that sneaky phenomenon, shifted firmly in favor of the visiting team and stayed there.

"We are in shock," said Europe's Justin Rose, whose victory over Phil Mickelson was one of the turning points. In reality, it was the Americans who were stunned. Jim Furyk fought back tears after missing a critical putt to lose to Sergio Garcia on 18. So too did Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley, who was unable to carry his strong pairs form into the individual format on the last day.

This was a Ryder Cup where the script was flipped for much of three days, and then completely reversed in the closing hours. Usually it is the Europeans who display their strength and camaraderie in the pairs matches, and the U.S. who comes to the fore in the singles. When Davis Love III's side secured a healthy advantage, there seemed to be no way back for Europe, even with the memory of the legendary Seve Ballesteros, who died of brain cancer last year and whose logo was on the European shirts, to spur it on.

Yet European captain Jose Maria Olazabal front-loaded his team in an attempt to gain some early traction. And it worked. Luke Donald was imperious in his triumph over Watson, and Ian Poulter, the MVP of this event with a perfect 4-0 record, waited until late to get the better of Webb Simpson.

There was a far more relaxed air about the Europeans, who were so tense on Friday and Saturday, on this final morning. So much so that Rory McIlroy almost missed his tee time, getting confused between central and eastern time zones and rushing to the tee box with just moments to spare before he would have been forfeited.

Nevertheless, McIlroy cut down America's talismanic rookie, Bradley, to continue the European juggernaut. By the time the previously out-of-form Paul Lawrie racked up another win and Rose sunk nerve-jangling putts on 17 and 18 to sneak past Mickelson, the Americans were left on their own, without that buoyant crowd from Friday and Saturday to carry them any longer.

"When you are going good, it is great," Steve Stricker said. "When you are not, it can be a negative, because you feel like you're letting the crowd down."

For this was a poor crowd, one content to holler and celebrate while its team seemed on an inexorable path to victory on the first two days but one which was decidedly muted, save for some unsporting cheers at European missed putts and water-bound shots, down the stretch.

"We wanted to silence the crowd and get things going our way," Poulter said. "We knew that if we got some blue on the board there would be a totally different feel about this place, and that is what happened."

Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson were the only Americans to record a victory, while Tiger Woods recorded a half-point in the final match with Francisco Molinari, one effectively made redundant as Europe had already retained the Cup by the time it was completed.

That move in itself will surely lead to some questioning the selections of Love, but perhaps putting Woods at the end of his lineup was as much a reflection on the 14-time major champion's form as it was an error of captaincy.

After Garcia won the final two holes to down Furyk and Lee Westwood produced his best golf of the week to outduel Matt Kuchar, it was left to two of the most out-of-sorts players in each side to decide things.

Stricker had lost three times alongside Woods in the pairs, while Martin Kaymer had been chosen only once because of a drastic slump in form. The golf was far from vintage, but Kaymer secured three straight pars at the end and rolled in the winning putt from the tricky distance of eight feet to close things out.

(Reuters)The tension brought back memories of Kaymer's German compatriot, Bernhard Langer, who spent years agonizing over his missed putt in similar circumstances that cost Europe the Cup at Kiawah Island in 1991. If Kaymer had missed, Woods would have had to only split his final hole against Molinari to give the Americans victory. Still, in the end, this was Europe's day. Kaymer drained the putt, and the remaining flicker of hope, from the U.S.

Europe has won five of the last six Ryder Cup events and must now be considered a strong favorite to clinch it once more in 2014, even with the contest at Gleneagles in Scotland still two years off.

European players seem to have discovered the secret in finding inspiration in many different forms ? and in refusing to quit even when the scenario looks impossible.

The previous time a 10-6 deficit was overturned was when the U.S. famously did it in 1999 at Brookline, for what remains Woods' only victory in this event. Yet that was on home soil and the U.S. team was clearly stronger on paper.

Nothing should be taken away from these Europeans, who held firm and produced a superb and stirring revival. But this was a result that would not have been possible if the Americans had not seen their nerves desert them at the worst possible time, setting an epic and historic collapse into motion.

Germany's Steinbrueck urges SPD unity to oust Merkel

MUENSTER, Germany (Reuters) - Peer Steinbrueck, the man chosen to lead Germany's opposition Social Democrats into an election next year as its candidate for chancellor, called for party unity on Saturday, saying it would otherwise be difficult to unseat Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Steinbrueck, a feisty former finance minister distrusted by Social Democrat (SPD) leftwingers for his centrist economic views, also repeated his opposition to serving under Merkel, a conservative, in a future coalition government.

"This federal election can only be won with the mobilization of our supporters ... Unity is important," Steinbrueck told a party rally in Muenster in the western region of North-Rhine Westphalia, where he once served as state premier.

"An SPD candidate for chancellor must reach 62 million voters," he added, signaling a pitch for the middle ground where he hopes to lure supporters of Merkel's conservatives.

In power since 2005 and buoyed by her calm and resolute handling of the three-year-old euro debt crisis, Merkel enjoys higher approval ratings than Steinbrueck, while opinion polls put her party comfortably ahead of the SPD.

A snap poll conducted by ARD-DeutschlandTrends on Friday showed Merkel had 50 percent personal backing against 36 percent for Steinbrueck. Poll participants considered Merkel more likeable and credible than Steinbrueck and also more likely to overcome the euro crisis.

But 58 percent of respondents also thought that Steinbrueck, who was named as the SPD's "chancellor candidate" on Friday, would be a good candidate for his party and he was considered stronger on the theme of social justice than Merkel.

Despite their lead in the polls, Merkel's conservatives may struggle to form a government if their current coalition ally, the liberal Free Democrats, do badly in the 2013 election. She may then have to consider a coalition with the SPD like the one she led in 2005-09 when Steinbrueck ran the finance ministry.

UNCOMPROMISING

On Saturday, Steinbrueck repeated his preference for a coalition with the Greens and his unwillingness to cut a deal with Merkel.

"I will not be won over to (serve in) a Merkel cabinet ... We want to throw out all three from this government," he said, referring to Merkel's Christian Democrats, their Bavaria-based sister party the Christian Social Union and the FDP.

To loud applause, Steinbrueck reaffirmed his plans for tighter regulation of the financial markets and also called for a legal minimum wage and increased spending on education.

Known for his acerbic wit, Steinbrueck emerged as the SPD's candidate after two other contenders, party chairman Sigmar Gabriel and former foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stepped aside.

Saturday's newspapers said the choice of the combative Steinbrueck would make for a much more interesting election.

"On the one side stands the controlled and composed chancellor who seems to get on top of every crisis and is trusted by the Germans," said the best-selling Bild tabloid.

"And on the other is the passionate, rough-edged but also often thin-skinned Steinbrueck ... He will give everything for victory, without any Plan B, without a safety net for himself. If he loses that could be politically the end for him. That deserves respect. This time Germans will have a real choice."
