Time is money and the Pareto principle

While the ?time is money? adage is important to business, it comes hand in hand with the other 20/80 rule, otherwise known as the Pareto principle. Any good sales trainingcourse will tell you that the real profits in business (the 80%) come with effort that is invested cleverly and efficiently (the 20%). It?s no good ?being busy? in a vague and inefficient way (which usually involves hours wasted on Facebook and staring at emails), what you need to do if you want to really succeed in business is to invest your time extremely well.

People do this in different ways and knowing which way works the best for you is the most important part of training for business. Before you begin any sort of a business venture, the most critical talent to pick up is good time management skills. How you do this and how effective your method is will determine a lot how successful you are at business, so do not underestimate this most important facet to the whole entrepreneurial world.

Knocking off tasks one by one

People like different strategies and when it comes to sales training, a good program will expose you to a variety of these. One common approach is to begin with the hardest task and just slog your way through it until it is finished. The opposite approach is also common ? begin by doing a bunch of small easy tasks and then focus on the big ones.

Let?s look at this in more detail though and discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches.

Beginning with the hard tasks

The biggest advantage to beginning with the hard tasks is that they get done first and then the smaller, easier ones become a breeze. There?s a huge rush of motivation when you complete a difficult task, which can propel you to finish smaller ones.

The disadvantage to this approach is that it can end up taking longer than you expected and then you won?t have time for the smaller tasks.

A good way to compromise is to simply set aside a certain amount of time (1-2 hours) for finishing part of a hard task, and then move onto another couple of hours knocking off easy tasks.

Beginning with the easy tasks

If you take a sales training?course, you will learn that just the opposite can be true if you begin with the easy tasks. You may end up going through a lot of easy tasks, but pile up the hard ones which never get done.

Combining the above info from the compromise with a further element is a good solution. So you work on at least one or two hard tasks per day in 1-2 hour brackets and then work on the small tasks for the rest of your time and knock them individually.

Keeping a clean inbox

This is probably the most important aspect of time management, keeping a clean inbox.

First of all, what is an inbox? It?s not just your email, it can also be a tray on your desk (useful for memos that you print or mail that comes in). Generally, the idea is to leave nothing in there at the end of the day unless it?s an ongoing hard project that cannot be done in one day. If it?s a small task, then make sure it gets done when you are working on small tasks and then archive it. If it?s a long task, mark it as such in your emails and let it there until it gets done, at which point you archiveit right away.

If someone asks you a question, ignore it unless it?s an emergency. At some point in your day, set aside a time when you answer questions for 15-20 minutes (noon and the end of the day are good times for this). Answer all the questions you have been asked and get them out of your inbox.

If you stick to this system, pretty soon you will have a really clean inbox that?s actually being used in the most efficient way possible.

Another thing to keep in mind when you are trying to gain some sales training?skills is that for everything that you can automate, you are saving time. If something can be done by a computer, learn how to set it up and do it. If you don?t know how to do this, consider hiring an extra helping hand (i.e. someone who you can delegate these tasks to to save you time). Virtual assistants, freelance writers, system administrators and other contractors can be a godsend for many businesses as they allow them to focus on what they like doing best (creating, selling and growing their business) while the technical details are taken care of by people who are already skilled in that aspect of the venture.

Your clients will be able to view information about your products and services online and at the same time they will have the ability to order anything they would like.

A good sales training program will explain all of these aspects of business in a clear and concise way that will give you success if you implement it right.
