Commentary: Rubio Rebukes Obama, but is Lukewarm

Yahoo News asked readers to react to Sen. Marco Rubio's Republican response on Tuesday night. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | Marco Rubio, the junior senator from Florida, was chosen to deliver the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address. Rubio is to the GOP what Obama was to the 2004 Democrats -- a potential future leader.

Rubio spoke about the importance of the middle class and the necessity of the free economy. Sen. Rubio wants to be the defender of middle-class Americans and seemed to portray the president as a proponent of class distinction.

Rubio did not inspire me, despite my belief that our president is very much in favor of legislating wealth distribution. One of the assertions that I Rubio made, and I agree with, is that economic growth does benefit us all. However, when he said this, he lost me: "Economic growth is the best way to help the middle class. Unfortunately, our economy actually shrank during the last three months of 2012. But if we can get the economy to grow at just 4 percent a year, it would create millions of middle-class jobs that if we could get the economy to grow by just 4 percent per year, we would create millions of jobs."

GDP growth of that magnitude rarely happens. According to data from the World Bank, we have had GDP growth of 4 percent or more, only five times in the past 21 years.

That is such a simple statement to make and yet such a difficult task to accomplish and any politician who fails to realize and appreciate that, cannot be taken seriously, and is simply feeding false hope to the population. This resident of Danbury, Conn., wants to hear facts, not wishes.
